The St. Frederick High golf team withdrew from matches against two other high schools at the Caldwell Parish Country Club in Columbia, La., when its black player was not allowed on the course.

Coach James Murphy said his team had been practicing for about 20 minutes when told the private club bans blacks.

“It kind of shocked me,” said Dondre Green, a senior who has played at several private clubs while competing for St. Frederick the past two years. Green is the No. 5 player on St. Frederick’s eight-man team.
