COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Fairbrother’s 3 RBIs Help Titans Beat UNLV

Craig Fairbrother hit a home run and had three runs batted in as Cal State Fullerton defeated Nevada Las Vegas, 5-3, in a Big West Conference game Saturday at Las Vegas.

Fairbrother hit a two-run home run and had a sacrifice fly as Fullerton improved to 24-18 and 7-4 in conference. Steve Sisco had two hits and one RBI for the Titans.

Dan Naulty (5-3) picked up the victory, allowing one earned run in 7 1/3 innings and Chris Robinson picked up his sixth save, which ties him for second on the school list with Ray Lane (1979) and Scott Wright (1982).

In another Big West Conference baseball game:

Cal State Long Beach 10, UC Irvine 1--Bryant Winslow set the UC Irvine record by hitting his 10th home run of the season. The loss was the 10th consecutive in the conference for Irvine (19-26, 1-10). Cal State Long Beach (33-13, 9-2) scored twice in the first and third innings and opened an 8-0 lead with a four-run fifth inning, highlighted by Rudy Rodriguez’s two-run double. Long Beach moved into a first-place tie with Fresno State, which lost, 1-0, to San Jose State Saturday.

Winslow had two of Irvine’s four hits. The previous home run record for a season was nine and was shared by five players.

In California College Athletic Assn. baseball:

Chapman 3, UC Riverside 2--Ruben Ayala hit a two-run home run to tie the score at 2-2 for UC Riverside (22-19-1, 9-9). In the bottom of the ninth, James Merriweather singled, went to second on a sacrifice and scored when Mike Giuseffi singled to right-center field. Merriweather had three hits and scored twice and Chris Sauritch and Cliff Anderson each had two hits and one RBI for host Chapman (11-29, 7-14).

In Golden State Athletic Conference baseball:

Christ College Irvine 8-6, Cal Baptist 7-2--Mike Adams had four hits and three RBIs in the first game and had two hits and two RBIs in the second game for host Christ College Irvine. Adams got the victory in the first game to make his record 10-1. Lou Simon had three hits and scored in the second game for CCI (24-12-1, 10-5).

In Big West Conference softball:

Cal State Fullerton 2-7, Cal State Long Beach 1-4--Tiffany Boyd (25-5) won both games and tied her season-high by striking out 10 in the first game for host Cal State Fullerton. Jill Matyuch had two hits, scored and had one RBI in the first game and Joy Tiner had two hits, scored and had two RBIs in the second game for fifth-ranked Fullerton (42-12-1, 18-7-1).

In Golden State Athletic Conference softball:

Azusa Pacific 2-10, Southern California College 1-4--Diana Franklin had two hits and scored a run in the first game, and Linda Bilyue had two hits with a run scored and an RBI in the second game for host SCC (16-16, 6-6).
