USD’s Noriega Wins Title at WCC Championships

USD’s Jose Luis Noriega defeated Pepperdine’s Alejo Mancisidor in the singles final of the West Coast Conference championships Sunday at St. Mary’s College.

Noriega, the 1989 WCC champion, edged Mancisidor, last year’s winner, 6-7 (7-5), 6-4, 6-4. Noriega, a junior from Peru, is ranked 10th in the nation, Mancisidor 14th.

Pepperdine leads USD in the team standings, 90-75. Third-place University of San Francisco has 33 points. Rain postponed the doubles portion of the tournament until April 29.

Cal State Long Beach scored a 5-3 nonconference victory over San Diego State. Joe McDonough won a singles match and, with Recardo Herrera, also scored a victory in doubles.

Michael Sass also had a singles victory for the Aztecs, who are 17-7.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Pepperdine won its fourth consecutive West Coast Conference Championship on its home courts in Malibu, but second-place University of San Diego still won two doubles titles.

Bringing home championships were second-seeded Kara Brady and Laura Richards, who upset Pepperdine’s Camilla Ohrman and Anna Brunstrom, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6, and top-seeded Sakolwan Kacharoen and Karen Lauer, who beat second-seeded Kirsten Smith and Marie Villani of Pepperdine, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Two USD singles players, Brady and Julie McKeon, were beaten in the finals of their flights. McKeon was the No. 1 seed.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

San Diego’s Karolyn Kirby and Angela Rock finished third at the Diet Pepsi Clearwater Open in Florida and earned $5,200. The duo was seeded first after winning the first two stops on the Women’s Pro Beach Volleyball Tour. San Diego’s Gail Castro and Lori Kotas finished fourth and won $3,500. First were Linda Carrillo (Van Nuys) and Nina Matthies (Malibu), who defeated Honolulu’s Janice Harrer and Malibu’s Elaine Roque. Carrillo-Matthies won $9,600, Harrer-Roque $7,200.

WRESTLING

The Poway Wrestling Club won the California State Freestyle Tournament’s first team title at Fresno City College. Heavyweight Corey Farkas, who took second in the state high school wrestling championships, avenged his loss to American High’s Darrin Prisendorfh with a 3-0 victory. Byron Campbell, third at 143 pounds, also advanced to the National Greco-Roman and Freestyle Tournament in Warrensburg, Mo., July 27-Aug. 4. Isaac Romberg took fifth place at 157 pounds.

WOMEN’S SOFTBALL

UC Riverside scored the winning run from second base on two wild pitches by Kim Stutzman to take a 2-0, 14-inning victory over UC San Diego. UCSD (16-17) came back in the 10th inning of the second game, also scheduled for seven innings. Using the international tiebreaker, Kathy Fogg opened the inning at second base, went to third on Lynn Moreno’s sacrifice, and scored on a passed ball.
