HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Gil’s RBI Hit Carries Mission Bay by USDHS

Add Monday’s baseball game to the long list of outstanding ones played between Mission Bay and the University of San Diego high schools.

Mission Bay sophomore Danny Gil drove in the only run in the bottom of the 12th inning to give the Buccaneers a 1-0 victory over City Western League rival USDHS.

Josh Rees, who scored the winning run, was the winning pitcher in relief. Rees is 3-0.

Mission Bay’s Manny Castillo allowed only three hits in the first 10 innings. The Dons’ starter, Ian Hamilton, allowed three hits in 9 1/3 innings before being relieved by Rob Floco.

No. 4 Mission Bay, which defeated USDHS in the final of the City Conference Tournament earlier this month, improved to 14-4, 4-0. USDHS fell to 12-7, 3-1.

Mission Bay, which has won two San Diego Section titles in the past five years, entered the season 120-40 since Dennis Pugh became coach in 1979. USDHS has won four section titles under Coach Dick Serrano.

Other City Western games:

La Jolla 3, Kearny 0--Craig Woodall shut out Kearny (3-11-1, 0-4) on five hits and 10 strikeouts to improve to 3-3. Bryan Hidalgo, John Zuanich and Sean Murphy each drove in a run for the Vikings (10-5, 1-3).

City Central League

San Diego 5, Lincoln 1--Chino Arreola improved to 3-1 with a five-hitter at San Diego. Noe Moreno was two for three with an RBI for the Cavers (12-5-1, 3-1). Lincoln fell to 6-11, 1-3.

Crawford 10, Madison 3--Ryan Gaske was two for two with three RBIs and two runs, and Miguel Maldonado added three RBIs to lead Crawford (5-9, 3-1). Jim Jones had two doubles and two RBIs for Madison (4-7, 3-1).

City Eastern League

Patrick Henry 2, Mira Mesa 1--Patrick Henry (5-9, 3-1) moved into a tie for first with an upset of No. 5 Mira Mesa (15-4-1, 3-1).

Morse 9, Point Loma 4--Duane Bostic hit a grand slam in the top of the eighth inning to give Morse (5-9, 1-3) the victory. Point Loma (9-9, 2-2) had seven errors, Morse five.

City Harbor League

Coronado 5, St. Augustine 3--Coronado (5-7-1, 2-2) scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the first. Jim Skaalen, who was the winning pitcher, singled home two runs in that inning. Jorge Inzunza (5-1) took the loss for St. Augustine (11-7, 3-1).

Clairemont 10, Marian 4--In his first varsity at bat, Clairemont’s Armando Sandoval singled to drive in two runs. Clairemont (8-7-1, 2-2) scored in all but one inning. Chieftain Antoine Henry was three for three with one RBI and scored twice. Marian fell to 6-9-1, 0-4.
