COLLEGE ROUNDUP : La Verne Rallies to Break CLU’s Winning Streak at 14

La Verne scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning Friday en route to a 4-3 nonconference baseball victory over visiting Cal Lutheran, snapping the Kingsmen’s 14-game winning streak.

Cal Lutheran (26-7) posted two runs in the first, Blake Babki scoring the first run on a passed ball. Peter Washington hit a solo home run, his fourth homer of the season, in the third.

Cal Lutheran took a 3-1 lead into the seventh. Paul Perce (4-1) took the loss in relief of Mike Winslow.

SOFTBALL

Cal State Northridge 5-1, Santa Clara 0-0--Cal State Northridge, ranked 16th in the nation, shut down host Santa Clara’s offense in sweeping the doubleheader.

Right-hander Cami Allen did not allow a Santa Clara runner to advance beyond first base in the second game. Allen (11-13) surrendered only two hits, struck out four and walked one. Northridge, which managed only five hits, was only slightly more effective on offense than unranked Santa Clara in a game that lasted 1 hour 10 minutes.

The Matadors (32-27) scratched out their run in the fourth. Beth Calcante reached on a fielder’s choice and scored on Danielle Wood’s double to left--the only extra-base hit of the game.

Northridge scored two runs in the first inning to assume control in the first game. The Matadors had 12 hits overall, and Kim Oakes led the way with three. Wood and Debbie Barnard each had a pair of hits and a run batted in.

Heather Lindstrom (15-8) struck out six and walked none to earn the victory.

Antelope Valley 12, Citrus 2--Carrie Ryan was four for four, and her solo home run with one out in the sixth put host Antelope Valley ahead by 10 runs, bringing to an end the Foothill Conference game. Betsy Lund had two doubles, a two-run homer and three RBIs for Antelope Valley (22-14, 9-4).
