COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Things Go Perfectly for Boyd, Titans
Sophomore Tiffany Boyd pitched a perfect game in the opener and Cal State Fullerton went on to beat California, 1-0, in both games of a nonconference softball doubleheader Saturday at Fullerton.
Boyd pitched 6 1/3 innings of no-hit ball in the second game for fourth-ranked Fullerton. Cal is ranked third in the country.
Boyd’s perfect game was the first of her career and her third no-hitter. She had six strikeouts. Fullerton scored a run in the sixth on an RBI single by Jill Matyuch off Michele Granger (25-7), who allowed two hits and struck out five.
Boyd (28-5), of Woodbridge High School, was within two outs of a second no-hitter but allowed two singles in the seventh.
In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. softball:
Chapman 2-4, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 1-2--Jackie Blake had an RBI single to score Christy Wurster in the 10th inning of the first game. Each team scored a single run in the eighth. Blake (20-4) got the victory in the first game and the save in the second. She also had two hits in the second game.
