Chuck Ferrero, the football coach at Valley College for the past 11 seasons, was named the school’s athletic director Wednesday.

Ferrero, who has a 53-55-1 record at Valley, officially will take over the men’s and women’s athletic programs June 16, when the current contracts of George Goff (men) and Diedra Stark (women) expire.

Under a plan adopted by the school’s administration, the two athletic director positions will be consolidated under one title. Goff, the men’s athletic director since 1972, will retire at the end of this semester. Stark is expected to retain a full-time faculty position at Valley.

In order to accept the athletic director job, Ferrero must relinquish his coaching position in accordance with Valley College rules.

“This was not an easy decision for me to make,” said Ferrero, 43. “I still enjoy coaching. I’m not burned out in coaching at all. I just felt like this was a good opportunity for me that might not come around again for several years.

“I want to better the whole athletic program. There are a lot of hard-working coaches (at Valley) and you have to take care of those people who work hard and coach well.”

Ferrero was athletic director at Canyon High from 1974-79 before coming to Valley.

Jim Fenwick, 38, a former Valley assistant and Pierce head football coach, is the leading candidate to replace Ferrero, although Valley is not expected to make an announcement until next week.

Fenwick began working with the Monarch coaching staff earlier this year after spending two seasons at Miami (Ohio) and one at Pacific as an assistant.

The head coach at Pierce from 1981-85, Fenwick led the Brahmas to three Southern California Conference championships. He was the special-teams coordinator at Cal State Northridge in 1986.
