KCBS Channel 2 and KCAL Channel 9 are the only two stations that will compete for the coveted Los Angeles Area Emmy Award for best daily 60-minute newscast, the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences said.

The nominations went to KCAL’s 8 p.m. newscast, anchored by Jerry Dunphy and Jane Velez-Mitchell, and to KCBS’ 5 p.m. newscast, anchored last year by Jim Lampley and Bree Walker (Michael Tuck has since replaced Lampley).

Also announced this week by the academy, two weeks after other nominations were disclosed, were the nominations for best camera crew in a news feature. KCAL, KCBS and KABC Channel 7 got two each, and KTTV Channel 11 got one.

The nominations for Disney-owned KCAL gave the station 35 for the 1990 awards, second most of any local station, behind KABC’s 47.

The nod to Channel 2’s 5 p.m. newscast made KCBS the only station to be nominated in both the 30-minute and 60-minute categories. KCBS finished fourth among local stations with 32 nominations. Public-TV station KCET Channel 28 was third with 33.

Winners will be announced May 18 at a ceremony at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium.
