Jackie Silva, the top-ranked player in the Women’s Professional Volleyball Assn. for the past two years, will not compete in the Hermosa Open on Saturday and Sunday at Hermosa Beach.

Injuries have forced the Brazilian standout to miss the first five events on this year’s tour. In 1990 she won 12 of 16 tournaments, including the Hermosa Open with partner Janice Opalinski.

This weekend’s 32-team field is led by Karolyn Kirby and Angela Rock. The top-seeded team has won three tournaments this year, in Austin, Tex., Daytona Beach, Fla. and Phoenix. Second-seeded Lori Kotas and Gail Castro won the Fresno Open two weeks ago and fourth-seeded Nina Matthies and Linda Carillo won the Clearwater, Fla. event April 21. Opalinski and Elaine Roque are seeded third. Their best performance was a second-place finish at Clearwater.

The National Sports Foundation has information on scholarships that may still be available to collegiate athletes. Spokesman Joe Tirrell said: “Contrary to popular belief, students don’t have to be all-state to qualify” for many of the estimated 100,000 annual scholarships available, and consequently “millions of valuable dollars go unused” yearly. For information send a No. 10, self-addressed stamped envelope to the foundation, 612A Willow Drive, PO Box 940, Oakhurst, N.J. 07755.
