SOUTHERN SECTION VOLLEYBALL PLAYOFFS : Esperanza’s Perfect Record Remains Intact

Matt Cunningham had 16 kills as Esperanza defeated Downey in four games in a Southern Section 3-A first-round match Friday night at Esperanza.

Esperanza won, 15-2, 15-9, 18-20, 15-12 and improved to 17-0. The Aztecs are the only undefeated team in Orange County.

Brad Goldston had 11 kills for fourth-seeded Esperanza, which will play Garden Grove on Tuesday in the second round.

In other Division 3-A matches:

Foothill 3, Valencia 2--Jon Young had 28 kills and 28 digs for host Valencia (16-1), but it wasn’t enough as Foothill (10-4) won in a major upset, 15-7, 8-15, 16-14, 5-15, 15-10.

Foothill will meet La Serna in a second-round game Tuesday.

Garden Grove 3, El Modena 1--Troy Davis had 19 kills as host Garden Grove won, 15-7, 10-15, 15-3, 15-10.

Ryan Cook had 16 kills and David Tran had 47 assists, also for Garden Grove (16-3). El Modena ended the season 10-7.

North Torrance 3, Santiago 2--Visiting Santiago lost, 13-15, 15-7, 15-7, 11-15, 15-11.

La Serna 3, Pacifica 0--Matt Howze had 10 kills and Jeff Forslund added five digs as visiting Pacifica lost, 15-11, 15-10, 15-12.

In Division 2-A matches:

Calvary Chapel 3, Chadwick 0--Danny Newman had 11 kills and Mike Hernandez had 30 assists for host Calvary Chapel, which won, 15-6, 15-6, 15-11.

The top-seeded Eagles, the Olympic League champions, improved to 15-2. Chadwick finished 13-5.

Whittier Christian 3, Salesian 0--Host Whittier Christian won, 15-9, 15-9, 15-7.

The second-seeded Heralds, who finished second to Calvary Chapel in the Olympic League, improved to 15-2.
