COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Garrido Wins His 700th Game as Titan Baseball Coach

Augie Garrido won his 700th game as coach at Cal State Fullerton when the Titans defeated San Jose State, 2-1, in a Big West game Friday at Amerige Park.

Garrido is 700-313-6 at Fullerton and 921-446-7 overall.

Dan Naulty (8-3) pitched his fourth complete game, striking out seven, allowing six hits and walking one for Fullerton (33-21, 14-5 in conference).

Fullerton remains a game behind Fresno State in the standings with two games left.

Fresno State defeated UC Santa Barbara, 10-6, Friday. Long Beach remained a game behind Fullerton with a 14-6 victory over Pacific.

The Titans’ first run was a bit unorthodox.

Frank Charles singled to lead off the fourth inning, stole second and when Matt Hattabaugh singled and got caught in a rundown between first and second base, Charles scored.

In the fifth inning, Steve Sisco took first after being hit by a pitch, went to second on a groundout, took third on a wild pitch and scored on Phil Nevin’s sacrifice fly to right field.

Charles Havel doubled and scored on Mark O’Brien’s single in the eighth inning for San Jose State (24-29, 6-13). Mark Ringkamp (7-5) allowed eight hits in eight innings but took the loss.

Fullerton and San Jose State play at 1 p.m. today and Sunday at Amerige Park.

In another Big West Conference game:

Nevada Las Vegas 11, UC Irvine 5--Tory Miran had a three-run home run to break a 4-4 tie in the sixth inning for visiting Las Vegas (27-23, 10-9). Al Rodriguez had two hits and scored two runs for Irvine (23-31, 5-14).

T.J. Mathews (5-4) pitched the first 7 1/3 innings for the victory and David Bladow (5-7) pitched 5 2/3 innings to take the loss.

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. baseball:

Cal State Los Angeles 2, Chapman 1--Chapman scored a run in the seventh but visiting Cal State Los Angeles rallied for two runs in the eighth to win at Hart Park in Orange.

Cliff Anderson scored for Chapman (15-36, 10-20) on a balk. Cal State Los Angeles is 21-34, 12-18.
