SOUTHERN SECTION BADMINTON PLAYOFFS : Buena Park Takes Same Path to Final

Share

Buena Park High School’s badminton team, two-time defending Southern Section Division 4-A champions, used a familiar script to return to the finals. The Coyotes defeated the same team by the same score as last year.

Buena Park beat Bolsa Grande, 11-8, in Tuesday’s semifinal at Bolsa Grande.

“That was the same score as last year in the same situation,” Buena Park Coach Michelle Tafoya said. “I knew they were going to be tough.”

In a battle of unbeaten teams, Buena Park (16-0) will face Estancia (19-0) in the 4-A final at 4 p.m. Friday at Cypress College.

With Buena Park leading, 9-7, in the second round and its No. 1 girls’ double team of Thy Tran and Jennifer Chia facing stiff competition from Bolsa Grande’s No. 2 team of Katie Qui and Kandie Mach, senior Scott Lee clinched the match with 15-2 and 15-6 victories over Bolsa Grande’s Chesda Ly.

As expected, Buena Park’s Noy Sundara swept her matches to run her victory streak to 117. She also teamed with Lee to defeat Hoa Nguyen and Ruth Yao in mixed doubles. Bolsa Grande finished 18-1.
