COLLEGE BASEBALL NCAA REGIONAL PLAYOFFS : Northridge Wins First Playoff Game in Big Way, 13-6

Cal State Northridge defeated Miami (Fla.), 13-6, in the NCAA West II Regional Friday at Fresno in a baseball game that marked a first for both schools.

It was Northridge’s first baseball playoff victory at the Division I level.

For top-seeded Miami (46-16), it was the first time in 20 years of postseason play that an opponent scored as many as 13 runs. Scott Richardson and Craig Clayton led a 17-hit attack for the Matadors (42-17-1) with four hits each.

Richardson homered and drove in three runs. Clayton had two runs batted in. Greg Shockey had three hits and drove in four runs.

Fresno State 4, Stanford 2--Robbie Saitz, a senior right-hander, restricted the Cardinal to seven hits (39-20) as the Bulldogs became the only unbeaten team in the regional.

Stanford (38-22), the Pacific 10 Southern Division runner-up, will play Miami today at noon with the loser being eliminated and the winner advancing to play Fresno State at 7:30 p.m.

Portland 12, San Diego State 5--Dugan Duffy had three hits, including his first home run of the season, and drove in four runs for the Pacific 10 Northern Division champion Pilots (31-18), who eliminated the Aztecs (43-21).

CENTRAL REGIONAL

Freshman Brooks Kieschnick and Scott Pugh hit homers during a 10-run inning as No. 5 Texas routed Alabama-Birmingham, 16-3, in the first round of the NCAA Central Regional at Austin, Tex.

The Longhorns (47-16) took advantage of four errors and sent 14 men to the plate in the fifth inning against the Blazers (27-29).

Kieschnick, the Southwest Conference MVP, led off the fifth with a double and by the time he came up again, the score was 10-2.
