First baseman Chris Lugo’s two-run home run and Scott Patton’s complete game led Capistrano Valley to a 4-1 victory over top-seeded Arlington in a Southern Section 4-A quarterfinal game Friday at Arlington in Riverside.

Capistrano Valley (19-11-1), a wild-card entry from the South Coast League, will play league rival El Toro in the semifinals Tuesday at a site to be determined by a coin flip.

Lugo’s towering home run to center field in the third inning gave Capistrano Valley a 3-0 lead, more than enough for Patton (6-4).

The Cougars scored in the first inning on a single by Jonathan Petke followed by Patton’s double. After Lugo’s home run, they added another run in the third when Cade Gaspar’s single scored Patton.

Arlington (25-4) scored in the fourth when Brian Martineau came home on a throwing error by shortstop Gaspar.

Patton allowed four hits and struck out four.

In another 4-A game:

Canyon 8, Dos Pueblos 5--Canyon scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to break a tie at Canyon.

The victory earned the Comanches and Coach Hi Lavelle a spot in the semifinals for the first time since 1984, when Canyon won a Southern Section championship.

Canyon will play Paramount, a 5-2 winner over Sunny Hills, Tuesday at a site to be determined.

With the score tied at 5, Canyon (18-9-1) loaded the bases with none out in the fifth off Dos Pueblos starter Cy Brunner (6-3). Rory O’Leary walked, Jeff Brunswig reached on an error and Greg Tippin walked before John Schumacher walked to force in the go-ahead run. Catcher Ryan Puskas then hit a two-run single up the middle off reliever Lee Speshyock.

Canyon senior left-hander Mike Casagranda (7-4) went six-plus innings, allowing five runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out four.

“Getting to the semis is not an easy task,” Lavelle said. “But I honestly thought this team was capable of getting this far and there’s no limitations to what they can do. Now that we’ve reached this far, we’re hoping to get to Anaheim Stadium (site of the final).”
