School: Fountain Valley High

Sport: Track and field

Events: 100- and 300-meter low hurdles

Class: Sophomore

Tolson, who twisted her right ankle Tuesday during some school cafeteria horseplay, said she felt pain as she warmed up for the 100- and 300-meter low hurdle races Friday at the Southern Section Masters meet. But Tolson showed no ill effects during the races as she won both, the 100 in 14.38 seconds and the 300 in 43.25, which is the third best time in Orange County history. Tolson was limping after each race but she plans to continue training with her sights set on the State championships this weekend. Last season, running for La Quinta High, she qualified for the State meet in the 100 lows, but in the final, she tripped on the second hurdle and finished last. This year, she says, she’s ready for vindication.

Other top performers:

Jennifer Brundage, who struck out 17 and retired the final 24 batters in Irvine’s 16-inning, 3-0 victory over Sunny Hills in a 4-A quarterfinal.

Carrie Garritson, a Sunny Hills freshman who qualified for the State championships in the 3,200, finishing fourth in 10 minutes 47.58 seconds.

Deborah Goddu, who pitched a no-hitter for Whittier Christian in a 3-0 victory over Valley Christian in a 1-A quarterfinal. Goddu (11-0), a freshman, also pitched a three-hitter in the Heralds’ 3-1 playoff victory over St. Bonaventure.

Noy Sundara, finished her high-school badminton career by winning 121 consecutive singles matches for Buena Park, but her sweep in the section team championship couldn’t prevent an 11-8 Estancia victory.
