Today is Dick Wolfe’s last day as Cal State Fullerton men’s gymnastics coach, but the program, in limbo since Wolfe announced his retirement in April, apparently will live on.

The school announced Thursday that Michael Kelley, a volunteer assistant under Wolfe for the last six seasons, was appointed interim coach to replace Wolfe, who spent 23 years at Fullerton.

“It was always our intention to continue the program,” said Leanne Grotke, Titan associate athletic director. “Mike will lead the program until we advertise the position and hire someone else.”

Kelley, 40, a chiropractor with a practice in Fullerton, was a member of all three (1971, ’72 and ‘74) national championship men’s gymnastics teams at Fullerton and won nine All-American awards as an all-round competitor.

He was the national champion twice on vault and once on parallel bars. He was Fullerton’s athlete of the year in 1973 and was on the U.S. national team for three years.
