Detmer Card May Violate NCAA Rules
Although he has a year of eligibility left, Brigham Young quarterback Ty Detmer is on a football card, much to his and his school’s consternation.
The Pro Set card company, based in Dallas, annually issues a card featuring the previous year’s Heisman Trophy winner as part of its NFL set. In keeping with that tradition, this year’s card No. 37 depicts Detmer.
Having Detmer appear in the commercial set, making money for a profit-making venture, could be construed as a violation of NCAA rules, BYU officials say.
Detmer and BYU say they knew nothing of Pro Set’s plans to put out a Detmer card and that the matter has been turned over to the BYU legal department.
