Arizona State’s Mike Kelly a First-Team All-American

Arizona State outfielder Mike Kelly, a graduate of Los Alamitos High, was named a first-team NCAA Division I All-American by the American Baseball Coaches Assn.

Utah’s Mike Edwards, a sophomore third baseman from Valencia High, was named to the second team, as was Cal State Long Beach designated hitter Scott Talanoa, who attended Orange Coast College.

The Division I player of the year was third baseman Scott Stahoviak of Creighton.

Cal State Fullerton senior shortstop Jill Matyuch, a graduate of El Dorado High School, is a second-team selection on the GTE Academic All-American softball team.

Matyuch, a communications major with a 3.71 grade-point average, hit .299 with 22 runs batted in and had a .968 fielding percentage this season for the Titans, who were ranked third in the nation but lost to Cal State Long Beach in the NCAA Regionals.

The Christ College Irvine men’s basketball team has signed D’Andre Brown, a 6-foot-6 forward from Cerritos College, to a letter of intent.

Brown, who is a graduate of Brethren Christian, averaged 10 points and 6.5 rebounds a game for Cerritos, which finished 27-8.

Southern California College has signed four women’s basketball players and one women’s volleyball player.

The new Vanguard basketball players are:

--Jamie Zitterkopf, a 6-1 center who is transfering from Idaho State, where she averaged 11 points and nine rebounds and was the Big Sky Conference Freshman of the Year for the 1989-90 season.

--Emily Wedel, a 5-8 guard who helped Bear River High School in Grass Valley to a SacJoaquin Section title.

--Michele Reilley, a 6-1 center who helped California High in Whittier to the Whitmont League championship. She will also play volleyball.

--Cyndi Lyons, a 5-8 swing player who averaged 16.5 points for El Camino College.

The volleyball player is Genevie Wright, who was MVP of the volleyball team at Ganesha High in Pomona.
