Palmdale’s Williams Signs with Kansas City

Rodney Williams, an outfielder-designated-hitter at Palmdale High this season, has signed a contract with the Kansas City Royals.

Williams, who hit .397, drove in 12 runs and stole 17 bases, signed for $50,000 and will report to the Royals’ rookie-league team in Sarasota, Fla., on Monday.

Montclair Prep first baseman Andy Shaw has committed to play baseball next season at Cal State Fullerton.

Shaw batted .415 this season for the Mounties, who won the Southern Section 1-A Division championship for the second consecutive year. Shaw will receive a partial scholarship and said that he expects to sign a letter of intent next week.

Shaw (6-feet, 190 pounds) is one of several finalists vying for a berth on the West team in the U. S. Olympic Festival baseball competition, which will be played next month at USC.

Seniors Garth Teron of Santa Clara and Anthony Chessani of Fillmore were named co-MVPs of the Frontier League in a vote of the league’s baseball coaches.

Teron, a left-handed pitcher, batted .559 and had a 5-1 record with a 1.14 earned-run average. Chessani, a right-handed pitcher, had an 8-2 record with a 1.30 ERA and also batted .321.

The Glendale Swim Club will hold sign-ups Tuesday for athletes interested in synchronized swimming.

Swimmers must be between the ages of 8 and 14 and capable of swimming 25 yards of freestyle without stopping.

Delfino Ochoa, Robby Cook and Bill Scannell of Moorpark College’s state champion wrestling team have signed letters of intent at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Moorpark Coach John Keever said.

Ochoa, from Hueneme High, won state championships for Moorpark at 118 and 126 pounds. Cook, a Rio Mesa product, won the state title at 142 as a sophomore and was second at 134 as a freshman. Scannell of Buena was third at 118 as a sophomore.
