Surfing Tour Visits Oceanside
Three-time U.S. champion Mike Lambresi of Carlsbad, currently third after four stops on the 1991 Bud Pro Surfing Tour, is looking to pick up ground this week in the Professional Surfing Assn. of America $35,000 Body Glove Oceanside Open.
Competition, which begins each morning at 7:30, starts Wednesday and runs through Sunday’s finals on the south side of the Oceanside Pier.
Lambresi leads a long list of local surfers vying for the first prize check of $5,500. Other locals among the 1991 tour leaders include: Sean Mattison of Oceanside (10th); Taylor Knox of Carlsbad (17th); Chuy Reyna of Oceanside (19th); Rob Machado of Cardiff (22nd); and Trevor Christ of Encinitas (23rd).
Shane Beschen of San Clemente, who won the tour’s last event at Imperial Beach on Memorial Day, leads the 1991 tour with 2,750 points. Santa Barbara’s Chris Brown, the 1990 Oceanside Open champion, is second at 2,469. Lambresi has 2,360 points.
Dino Andino of San Clemente, the 1990 U.S. champion, is also among the favorites.
This is the largest professional tournament in San Diego County this summer.
The Life’s A Beach Classic, a 1990 Oceanside stop on the Assn. of Surfing Professionals’ World Tour, was canceled this year because Life’s A Beach Surfgear, a Vista-based company, pulled out as principal sponsor.
Inclusive in this week’s Oceanside Open is the Easy Rider bodyboarding division.
