30 Overcome by Fumes in Chemical Fire at UCLA
More than 30 people were overcome by toxic fumes Wednesday when a chemical fire broke out on the fourth floor of Young Hall at UCLA, authorities said.
The injured were treated for smoke inhalation and 14 of them--including nine firefighters and two campus security guards--were briefly hospitalized at UCLA Medical Center, UCLA spokeswoman Jan Klunder said.
More than 100 firefighters responded when the fire was reported in a chemical storage room shortly before 3 p.m., Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Pat Marek said. The fire was doused about 30 minutes later and the chemistry building and an adjacent building were evacuated. Marek said that, according to preliminary indications, the toxic fumes were generated by materials used to clean laboratory instruments.
