Sandy Greentree, who compiled a 104-45 record in seven seasons at Marshall High, has been named basketball coach at Chatsworth.

Greentree led Marshall to a City Section 3-A Division title in 1986, then announced his retirement, citing burnout. He has since experienced the other end of the spectrum.

“It started getting a little boring,” said Greentree, 35, who coached Marshall from 1979-86.

“It remains to be seen if I’m in this for the long haul, but I’m glad to be back.”

Greentree, a 1978 graduate of Cal State Northridge, has coached Chatsworth in the L. A. Watts Summer Games.

Greentree replaces Gary Shair, who resigned in the wake of the backlash over the year-round calendar, which takes effect in the fall in the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Shair, 54, retired after 21 years as coach.

Chatsworth was 6-13 overall, and finished third in West Valley League play at 3-7.

Several key players return, however, including Brady Mertes, a 6-foot-7 center who will be a junior in the fall.

Point guard Christen Dunbar, a first-team All-West Valley selection last season as a junior, and Chan Manor, a second-team forward as a junior, also return.

Brian Ebner, a reserve forward as a junior last season, also will contribute.

Chatsworth is expected to battle Reseda and El Camino Real for the league title.

“I think we’ll be a very competitive 3-A team,” Greentree said.

Greentree will remain a special-education teacher at Birmingham and will serve as a walk-on coach at Chatsworth.
