Townsend Cashes In Raider Promise for $6.6 Million

Raider defensive end Greg Townsend had a clause in his two-year contract that allowed him to renegotiate if he was named to the Pro Bowl.

Friday, Townsend cashed in on the promise by signing a five-year contract worth in excess of $6.6 million, his agent said.

Townsend had the best season of his eight-year career last season, recording a team-high 12 1/2 sacks. He was named as a starter to the 1990 Pro Bowl team and was due to earn a base salary of $800,000 in 1991 before the renegotiation.

Townsend’s new deal runs through the 1995 season.

The contract reportedly has incentive clauses that could push the package to $6.7 million.

Townsend will report to training camp with Raider veterans July 12. The Raiders open training camp for rookies Sunday in Oxnard.

As of Friday, the Raiders had 14 unsigned veterans but agreed to terms with sixth-round draft choice Nolan Harrison, a defensive tackle from Indiana.

A Raider official said the team expects to sign most, if not all, of the team’s draft choices by the opening of camp.
