HOLLYWOOD PARK : Fluttery Danseur Makes Landaluce a Siegel Tradition

A trip to the winner’s circle after the Landaluce Stakes is becoming customary for owners Jan, Mace and Samantha Siegel.

For the third time in the last four years, they won Hollywood Park’s only added-money race for 2-year-old fillies--and did so without their best horse. With Miss Iron Smoke, regarded as trainer Brian Mayberry’s top female juvenile, passing the Grade II race, Fluttery Danseur proved an ample replacement.

In front all the way, which was definitely the place to be Saturday, the Wavering Monarch filly followed up a nose victory at Keeneland in her debut with a 2 1/2-length triumph over favored Soviet Sojourn. All six other races on the main track also were won wire to wire.

Fluttery Danseur had to be vanned off the track after the race, apparently suffering from heat exhaustion.

“She was really, really hot before the race,” jockey Martin Pedroza said. “It’s a hot day and she ran really hard. I was ready to come back (to the winner’s circle) and she started going down slowly, like a camel.

“She went down and just lay there. I took the saddle off and they threw some water on her. She seemed to be OK. She was very tired when we got to the wire.”

Said veterinarian Ray Baran: “The first thing I said was to get the saddle off of her so she could breathe. If they do that, that’s half the battle and cold water is the other. So when we sprayed her, just a little bit, she got up. We continued to spray her, and she was fine.”

Making her first start since April 10, Fluttery Danseur, the 3-1 second choice while coupled with Unsaddled, led by 1 1/2 lengths with a furlong to run, then pulled away to win in 1:09 2/5. It was the fastest time in the stakes since Landaluce won what was then called the Hollywood Lassie in 1:08 in 1982.

Pedroza, the main rider for the Siegels and Mayberry, had his choice between the winner and Unsaddled, who wound up running last under Eddie Delahoussaye.

“I was at Keeneland when this filly ran the first time,” he said. “The filly she beat, Grand Betty, came back to win her next start by 12 lengths.”

Soviet Sojourn, favored on the strength of an easy maiden victory June 16, finished 6 1/2 lengths ahead of Prospector’s Dame, the longest shot in the field at almost 22-1.

“It’s hard to beat them when they run in 1:09 2/5,” said Chris McCarron, Soviet Sojourn’s jockey. “Martin had a lot of horse when I moved to him. I thought I had a chance to get him, but I didn’t.”

First-time starter She’s Tops was fourth, then came For Dixie, Too Soon To Look and Unsaddled.

Even though he has to spot his rivals nine pounds, Compelling Sound is the 6-5 morning-line favorite for today’s $209,800 Swaps Stakes at Hollywood Park.

A 3-year-old son of Seattle Slew, Compelling Sound picked up his third consecutive victory June 16 when he beat Best Pal in the Silver Screen Handicap.

He carried 118 pounds that day compared to 123 for Best Pal. Because of the allowance conditions of the 1 1/4-mile Swaps, Compelling Sound will carry 123 today and Best Pal only 114.

Best Pal, winless in five starts this year, will make his first start today for trainer Gary Jones. Owner John Mabee took the Habitony gelding away from Ian Jory after the Silver Screen. Best Pal is the 9-5 second choice.

Corporate Report, who was fourth in the Belmont Stakes after finishing second in the Preakness, will make his first start in California since March 30. McCarron will ride for Wayne Lukas. Corporate Report also will carry 114 pounds and he is 2-1.

The other Swaps starter is Pillaring, who was fourth, beaten by almost nine lengths in the Silver Screen. Because of the small field, there will be no show wagering.

Horse Racing Notes

Making her turf debut and only her second start, Classy Women set a world record for 5 1/2 furlongs when she won Saturday’s seventh race in 1:01. The 3-year-old Relaunch filly won by 5 1/2 lengths while breaking the record of 1:01 2/5 by Super Donna, Knight In Savannah and equaled six days earlier by Apollo.

Alysbelle, a full sister to Alysheba, will make her debut in today’s sixth race. A $950,000 yearling purchase by Clarence Scharbauer, Jr., she will break from the outside in the 5 1/2-furlong race and will be ridden by Gary Stevens. Also making her debut in the race will be Aunt Pearl, who is owned by the Oaktown Stable of rap star M.C. Hammer. After witnessing Lite Light’s easy victory over Meadow Star Saturday, Hammer will be at Hollywood Park today.
