PRO FOOTBALL : DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : Mike Wise Comes and Goes Again

Mike Wise, the reserve defensive end who left camp unannounced Saturday, returned for Monday’s morning practice but was AWOL again for the team’s afternoon workout. Coach Art Shell said Wise still has some personal problems to resolve.

“When he’s ready to come back, he’ll give us a call,” Shell said. “There’s a lot going on in his head. He has to take a long look to see where he’s at.”

Veteran outside linebacker Jerry Robinson, 34, hasn’t been getting much work with the first unit so far, leading to speculation about his job security.

Shell, though, said he is simply bringing Robinson along slowly.

“These guys will be here on game day,” he said. “You don’t need to kill them in practice.”

Shell, who played into his 30s, said he understands what it takes to ease aging muscles into shape.

“We’ve got a lot of young linebackers out there,” he said. “We know what Jerry Robinson can do. We’ve conferred with Jerry on this. We’ve been doing this with Jerry for the last couple of years.”

Aaron Wallace has gotten the bulk of the work at Robinson’s spot.

Guard Newt Harrell complained of chest pains at the morning workout and was held out of the afternoon practice. Harrell had some problems with a rapid heartbeat last season, Shell said.

With no kickers in camp, wide receiver Mervyn Fernandez volunteered for punting duty and began booming spirals. Fernandez claims to have once held the Canadian Football League record for longest punt while a member of the British Columbia Lions. . . . Shell expects kicker Jeff Jaeger and punter Jeff Gossett to report later this week. They were asked to stay away a few days so the Raiders could use their roster spots to evaluate other players.
