U.S. OLYMPIC FESTIVAL: ORANGE COUNTY’S DAY : LOS ANGELES 1991

Orange County players will make up one-sixth of the U.S. team at the World Youth Baseball Championships beginning a week from today in Brandon, Canada.

Aaron Boone, a USC-bound infielder from Villa Park and son of former major league catcher Bob Boone; outfielder Cale Carter, an Orange resident who will be a senior this fall at Mater Dei, and Mater Dei graduate Lionel Hastings of Orange, a sophomore-to-be at USC, will be members of the 18-man team announced by the U.S. Baseball Federation.

The team will be coached by Jack Hodges of Saddleback College.

The players will leave Sunday for tuneup games against the Mexican junior national team in Sioux Falls, N.D. They will continue on to Brandon on Thursday and open play in the youth championships next Saturday against No. 2-seeded Taipei.

Team USA is seeded third in the 12-team tournament behind Cuba and Taipei. It finished with the bronze medal in last year’s tournament in Havana.

Also among the participants this year will be teams from Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Italy, the Soviet Union, The Netherlands, Australia, Colombia and Nigeria.
