Chatsworth’s Forkel 2nd in Bowling Event

Eric Forkel of Chatsworth led by six pins after six frames in the the final of the Wichita Open in Wichita, Kan., on Saturday, but missed a chance for his first Professional Bowlers Assn. win when he managed only spares in the final four frames in a 238-210 loss to Chris Warren of Dallas.

Forkel, seeded third, defeated Hugh Miller of Seattle, 205-202, in his first match of the nationally televised stepladder finals. Forkel then beat Amleto Monacelli of Venezuela, 245-182, in the semifinal.

Forkel earned $10,500, while Warren received $20,000.

Twins Mike and Bob Bryan of Camarillo won the U. S. Tennis Assn.’s boys’ 14-and-under clay court doubles championship with a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Jeff Abrams of Newport Beach and Kelly Gullet of Whittier at Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

Mark Jeffrey of Woodland Hills moved a step closer to the Volvo Tennis/Los Angeles tournament with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Willy Quest of Long Beach in the pre-qualifying tournament at the Racquet Centre in Studio City.

Also advancing to next Saturday’s qualifying tournament was Sean Brawley of Pacific Palisades, who won after Chris Toomey of Long Beach defaulted.

Charles Hoeveler of Ross, Calif., will face 13th-seeded Dick Johnson of St. Louis in today’s final of the U.S. Tennis Assn.’s men’s 45-and-over hardcourt championship at the Westlake Tennis and Swim Club.

Hoeveler, the top-seeded player, eliminated eighth-seeded Dave Bohannon of Garden Grove, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5, while Johnson advanced with a 6-4, 6-4 win over 14th-seeded Gordon Davis of Encino in Saturday’s semifinals.
