Share

Rookie quarterback Todd Marinovich of the Raiders overcame a poor start to complete five of eight passes for 44 yards during a controlled intrasquad scrimmage Saturday.

Starting quarterback Jay Schroeder, backup Steve Beuerlein and veteran Vince Evans also took turns directing the offensive unit, which had problems getting off on the snap count.

Schroeder completed five of seven passes for 48 yards, but two of his passes were dropped. Beuerlein completed all four of his passes for 41 yards and Evans completed two of four passes for 17 yards.

The Raider defense also had its problems, as defensive end Howie Long jumped offsides twice during the first 10 plays.

Raider Coach Art Shell said the team needs more work before next Saturday’s exhibition opener against the San Francisco 49ers at the Coliseum.

“I’m never going to be pleased until we become a machine,” Shell said. “Right now we’re not the machine that I expect us to be, but I think we’ll be ready to play by the time we play next Saturday.

“We had a good look at some things and I think the guys realize that we’re not as sharp as we need to be.”

Shell was pleased with the work of running back Roger Craig, who rushed for 15 yards in six carries, including a one-yard touchdown.

“Roger’s having a good camp. He’s doing well, he really is,” Shell said.

Tackle Steve Wright was held out of the scrimmage because of a sore knee and tailback Greg Bell missed the scrimmage because of a sore shoulder. . . . The Raiders will resume two-a-day drills Monday.
