Dan Donovan has been hired as the boys’ basketball coach at St. Genevieve High, the school’s athletic department announced Tuesday.

Donovan, 29, replaces Scott Smith, who resigned in the spring after stating that he no longer wished to coach both basketball and baseball. Smith will remain as baseball coach. Donovan was an assistant at Alemany last season and previously served as an assistant at Bosco Tech.

St. Genevieve finished 8-16 overall and 1-9 in San Fernando League play last season.

The school competes at the Southern Section 2-A Division level in basketball. The Valiants were 2-10, 0-10 in league play in 1989-90.

John Wordin, 27, of West Hills, placed in the top 15 this week in two cycling road races in Belgium.

Wordin, who is sponsored by the community of West Hills, placed seventh in the 120-kilometer Grand Prix de Ingelmuster on Saturday.

Wordin was part of an eight-man pack that made an all-out sprint for the finish line.

On Monday, Wordin finished 15th in the Omloop Diksmuide, a 70-kilometer circuit road race.

Keith Owens, a former Birmingham High and UCLA standout, will play for the Lakers’ entry in the Southern California Summer Pro Basketball League.

Owens, a 6-7 1/2 center-forward, joined three members of the Lakers’ regular-season squad--Elden Campbell, Tony Smith and Irving Thomas--on the summer roster for league play. Other players include former Clipper guard Jay Edwards and former Stanford star Andrew Vlahov.
