BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Fetters to Get Another Try in 5th Spot

Share

After Mike Fetters’ mediocre outing Saturday, the cumulative record of the four pitchers who have auditioned for the fifth spot in the starting rotation fell to 1-9. Their combined earned-run average is 8.84.

The breakdown of their starts: Joe Grahe (0-1), seven batters, seven earned runs; Scott Lewis (1-5), 44 innings, 34 earned runs; Fernando Valenzuela (0-2), 4 2/3 innings, nine earned runs; Fetters (0-1), 4 1/3 innings, four earned runs.

Manager Doug Rader said he wasn’t unhappy with Fetters’ effort. “Mike was a little inconsistent,” he said. “If you had to point to one thing as to why he hasn’t been thrown into a rotation at the big league level before this, it’s because of that. The arm is there, the arm strength is there, the repertoire is all there. He just needs to find a way to master his inconsistency. . . . I think we need to give Mike another try.”

Left fielder Luis Polonia was removed from Saturday’s game after 5 1/2 innings because of a hyper-extended left shoulder, incurred when he overslid second base on a steal attempt in the fifth inning. His status is day to day. . . . Jeff Robinson tied a club record for a reliever in the sixth inning when he was charged with his ninth wild pitch. Mark Clear also made nine wild pitches, in 1979. . . . Scott Bailes was cautioned by plate umpire Vic Voltaggio and both benches were warned after Bailes hit Kevin Maas with a pitch in the sixth inning. Bailes was fined $450 for hitting New York’s Randy Velarde with a pitch May 14 at New York.

Today’s game matches left-hander Jim Abbott against his former University of Michigan road roommate, right-hander Scott Kamieniecki. Abbott was a freshman in 1986 when Kamieniecki was a senior, but Abbott went from college to the major leagues, while Kamieniecki spent four seasons in the minor leagues.

“I always followed him. When I came to school, he was the guy we all modeled ourselves after because he was so successful,” Abbott said. “I’m really looking forward to it.”
