A man suspected of driving a stolen car purposely rammed a police car early Monday as Oxnard officers were pursuing him, police said.

Edmundo Sanchez, 31, of Oxnard was arrested by police in the 1800 block of San Gorgonio Avenue after slamming into the patrol car and causing a whiplash injury to Officer Vince Otani, said Officer Len Newcomb.

The incident began about 6:30 a.m., when officers responded to a fight in the 100 block of Alpine Street in Oxnard, Newcomb said. Sanchez, who was allegedly driving a stolen car, fled and was pursued by the officers. After Sanchez struck another car, he put the car that he was driving in reverse and rammed Otani’s police car, authorities said.
