Lee Trevino, saying he is tired, announced Saturday he had withdrawn from this week’s PGA Championship in Carmel, Ind.

Trevino, the PGA champion in 1974 and 1984, made the comment after tying the course record with a six-under-par 66 in the second round of the Northville Long Island Classic.

“I pulled out of the PGA because I am tired. My wife agrees with me that it was time to take a break.”

The tournament, the last major championship of the year, begins Thursday.

Trevino’s 66, which followed a 78 in the opening round of the Senior Tour event at the 6,655-yard Meadow Brook Club course, tied the mark set in 1988 by four tour players. It left him at par 144, heading into today’s final round.

“This was a great confidence builder,” said Trevino, the 1990 Senior Tour player of the year and third on this year’s money list with $417,311. “It was probably the easiest 66 I’ve ever had.”
