The Women’s Guild of San Pedro Peninsula Hospital Foundation has announced that Doris Booth is the chairperson for its Oct. 26 gala, to be held at the Sheraton in Los Angeles Harbor. Booth, a 30-year resident of the Palos Verdes area, has been a member of the Women’s Guild since 1985.

Four students at San Pedro/Wilmington Skills Center have received cash awards for outstanding work. The Texaco Award of $1,000 went to Marjorie Hayes and Jason Garcia. The Soroptimist Club of the Harbor Area presented Maria Jimenez with $300, and Gabriela Albillo received a $100 U.S. Savings Bond.

Robert D. Kleist has been elected chairman of the board of the International Visitors Council of Los Angeles. Kleist is American corporate adviser for Evergreen International, the world’s largest container ship operation, with offices in San Pedro, New York, Taipei and Hamburg.

Patricia M. Hein of Redondo Beach has been elected regent of the El Redondo Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Other officers are Carolyn Bushnell and Sara Schulz, vice regents; Bliss Pinkerton and Nancy Wagoner, secretaries; Mary Bhuta, treasurer.

Palos Verdes Peninsula residents Sandy Leonard and Marlys Kinnel have been named to top posts of Community Helpline. Leonard is the president and Kinnel is the executive director. The Community Helpline, marking its 20th anniversary, provides a telephone listening service.

Chanda Demetria Brown, a June graduate of Gardena High School, and Joy Rodrigues, a June graduate of Banning High School, have been awarded $4,000 Home Savings of America Career Awareness Program scholarships.

Chanda, the daughter of John Rozell and Betty Brown, maintained a 3.9 grade-point average while serving as secretary of the French Club and the Future Homemakers of America, and was a member of the California Scholarship Federation. She will attend Alcorn State University, majoring in business administration.

Joy, the daughter of Johnnie and Susie Flores, maintained a 3.8 grade-point average while serving as commissioner of spirit on the Student Council, co-captain of the drill team and member-at-large on the Senior Council. She will attend Cal State Long Beach, majoring in business administration.

Soprano Gloria Vander Hoef of Cal State Dominguez Hills has been awarded a $500 scholarship by Palos Verdes Peninsula alumni of Mu Phi Epsilon. Pianist Victor Cegarra of El Camino College received $400. The group awarded $2,700, with the balance going toward music programs in Palos Verdes, Torrance, Hermosa Beach and Manhattan Beach schools.

Frank DeSimone, a senior at Leuzinger High School in Lawndale, has been named to Who’s Who Among American High School Students and has received the Volunteer Appreciation Award from the city of Hawthorne. He has maintained a 4.0-plus grade-point average for three years, had perfect attendance for two years, won the Harvard Book Award and the American Legion Certificate.

Gordon E. Kirk, senior pastor for Rolling Hills Covenant Church, has left to become senior pastor of Lake Avenue Congregational Church in Pasadena. Kirk, an adjunct professor at Biola University in the Talbot School of Theology, and his wife, Patricia, have a daughter, Kristina Anne, and a son, Jonathan Robert.
