IRVINE : Trademark Bridge Damaged in Fire
One of the wooden footbridges that gives the city’s Woodbridge community its name was damaged Tuesday morning when an arsonist poured flammable liquid over the thick timbers and set it ablaze, fire officials reported.
The fire, reported at 4:30 a.m., charred a 10-foot section, forcing officials to temporarily close it, Orange County Fire Department Capt. Dan Young said. The 150-foot bridge spans South Lake, one of the community’s two lakes.
A city building inspector examined the bridge later Tuesday and determined that it was safe, but part of the structure should be avoided until it can be repaired, said Bob Storchheim, Irvine’s manager of building, safety and engineering.
Firefighters have no suspects and are seeking the public’s help, Young said. Anyone with information may call fire investigators at (714) 744-0505.
