PRO FOOTBALL : DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : Davis Signs 3-Year Contract

Defensive end Scott Davis ended a five-week holdout, signing a three-year contract. No terms were disclosed, but a source close to the negotiations said Davis will earn $700,000 a season, which makes him the fourth-highest-paid defensive player on the team behind Howie Long at $1.2 million, Greg Townsend at $1 million and Bob Golic at $750,000.

Davis earned a reported $250,000 last season.

Although the Raiders have requested a one-week roster exemption for Davis, they are expected to activate him for their final exhibition game Friday night at San Diego.

“We’ll try to get him some playing time,” Coach Art Shell said. “He told me he’s in pretty good shape, and the coaches seem to think he’s in pretty good shape. He’s just not in football shape. The only way to get into football shape is to play.”

Tailback Greg Bell, released after reaching an injury settlement with the Raiders, said he hopes to sign with the Raiders or another team this season after his sprained left ankle heals.

“This isn’t the last time you’ll be sticking a camera in front of me,” Bell told reporters. “This doesn’t set me back at all.”

A free agent, Bell may negotiate with any NFL team.

“I want to get healthy and show all the doubters,” he said. “I still make the cuts, and I still run through people. I just had some bad luck. Last year it was the other ankle, and this year it was the left ankle.”
