BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Vaughn, Greenwell Scuffle Before Game

Share

While fans filing into Anaheim Stadium watched in amazement, first baseman Mo Vaughn and left fielder Mike Greenwell of the Boston Red Sox scuffled during batting practice Saturday.

According to witnesses, Greenwell took exception to Vaughn’s joking gesture of chucking him on the chin. Vaughn challenged Greenwell to punch him, and when Greenwell instead entered the batting cage, Vaughn insulted him. Greenwell left the cage to confront Vaughn, and the muscular rookie landed several punches in addition to pushing Greenwell against the side of the cage before Jack Clark pulled Vaughn away and coach Dick Berardino pulled Greenwell off the netting.

The two argued after they were separated, and Greenwell threw Vaughn’s cap at him. Greenwell had a bruise under his right eye and a cut next to his eye as a result of the confrontation, but both remained in the lineup.

“I have no time for this right now,” said Manager Joe Morgan, who called both players into his office.

Greenwell, who angrily chased reporters out of the clubhouse when they attempted to determine what had happened, later said: “I hope you guys are happy. Now you’ve got something to . . . write about.” Vaughn said he and Greenwell patched up their differences soon after the incident.

Greenwell was involved in another altercation this season, when he fought with shortstop Luis Rivera in the dugout in Baltimore.

Center fielder Junior Felix worked out with the Angels and will be activated today, as is required at the expiration of 20-day rehabilitation assignments. However, it is not clear how the Angels will open a roster spot for him. It’s possible he will be optioned to triple-A Edmonton until rosters expand to 40 on Sept. 1.

Felix, who last played for the Angels on June 19, said he has recovered from the strained right calf muscle that twice put him on the disabled list.

Bobby Rose took himself out of the Angels’ lineup after aggravating a shoulder injury he had incurred on Friday. He was replaced at second base by Luis Sojo. . . . Boston catcher Tony Pena (back spasms) missed starts in back-to-back games for the first time this season.
