OUTLOOK The Friars, who had one of the dominant programs in the 1980s, have fallen on hard times the past two seasons, winning one league game. With only eight returning starters, the woes could continue. “We’re a lot younger than we were last year,” Toner said. “We’re hoping to show some improvement.” The Friars have enough potential that they could return to the .500 level. Nelson, a reserve quarterback last season, has a lively arm and impressed some coaches during the summer. The offensive line has two returning starters, including Rauterkaus, who is big and fast. Dodd has good hands and could become one of the leagues top tight ends. Defensively, the Friars are strong up front with Finch, Gonchar, Long, Muller and Nicasio, but the secondary lacks experience.
