SIMI VALLEY : 3 Boys Held After Fire Burns 2 Acres
Three boys playing with a cigarette lighter Monday afternoon ignited a two-acre grass fire in a vacant lot near Fitzgerald Road and 1st Street in Simi Valley, authorities said.
Ventura County Fire Capt. Jerry Garner said firefighters allowed the fire to burn itself out to clear the field of dry grass to prevent the possibility of another fire. The field is surrounded by dirt roads, he said, and the flames posed no threat to houses that line one side of the property.
Three neighborhood boys, ages 11 or 12, were arrested in connection with the fire, counseled and released to their parents, Police Sgt. Gordon Weeks said.
