A Laguna Niguel woman escaped serious injury Thursday morning after being forced off Interstate 5 by a hit-and-run driver in a tractor-trailer truck, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Connie Lee Hoffman, 39, was traveling southbound just south of Junipero Serra Road at about 7:50 a.m. when a white 18-wheeler moved into her lane, pushing her car off the side of the freeway, CHP Officer Jerry Graul said.

Hoffman’s 1991 Ford Escort rolled down a slight embankment and landed about 50 feet off the freeway, Graul reported.

Hoffman was taken by ambulance to Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo, where she was treated and released.

The truck driver pulled over momentarily, then drove away, Graul said.

Hoffman’s seat belt may have saved her from serious injury, CHP Officer Ken Daily said.

The CHP asks anyone who saw the accident or with information on the truck to call officers at (714) 661-6215.
