A hearing has been scheduled for Oct. 7 in Van Nuys Municipal Court to determine whether California or Nevada has jurisdiction in a $23,000 suit filed by Ten Goose Boxing of Van Nuys against the Mirage Hotel in Las Vegas.

The suit seeks the payment by the Mirage of medical bills incurred by lightweight boxer Gabriel Ruelas of Arleta, who suffered a broken elbow during a bout at the Mirage on April 14, 1990. The unusual injury required two operations in which metal pins were inserted in the bones. Also, a bone graft from Ruelas’ hip to the injured elbow was required.

Dan Goossen, president of Ten Goose, said the suit was filed June 4 after the Mirage refused to pay Ruelas’ medical bills. The suit also charges that the hotel failed to secure proper insurance coverage for the boxer in his fight against veteran Jeff Franklin of Las Vegas.
