Mall Gains U.S. Open Junior Final

Anne Mall of Laguna Niguel advanced to the final of the U.S. Open junior girls’ division Saturday with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory over Beth Berris of Lodi, Calif.

Mall will face second-seeded Karina Habsudova of Czechoslovakia today on the grandstand court after the senior men’s doubles championship match, which begins at 9 a.m. (PDT).

Mall, who is rooming with Berris in New York, avenged a 6-4, 6-4 loss to Berris in the Seventeen Magazine tournament final in May at Mission Viejo.

“We avoided talking about (Saturday’s) match last night,” Mall said. “But it wasn’t a big deal.

“(Just to reach the U.S. Open final) is great, so I’m not really nervous about (the match).”
