Mike Pawlawski completed more than half his passes--for touchdowns.

“I had no idea I was breaking a record,” Pawlawski said after six of his 11 completions went for touchdowns as California got its highest modern-era point total in an 86-24 victory over Pacific on Saturday.

“This is one of the most dominant offenses anywhere,” said Pawlawski, whose six touchdown passes set another Cal record. He had only 13 attempts.

“I’ve never been in a game with that many points scored,” Cal Coach Bruce Snyder said.

That’s understandable.

The Golden Bears never punted in winning their opener and eclipsing the school’s previous modern-day scoring high, set with a 60-14 victory over Montana on Nov. 15, 1947.

The 110 points also set a record for a game involving Cal, surpassing the 103 scored in the Bears’ 54-49 win over Washington on Oct. 6, 1973.

Pacific (0-2) remained winless despite scoring 64 points in its first two games. The Tigers, who dropped their opener to Cal State Sacramento, 43-40, took their worst beating since a 69-0 loss to St. Mary’s Pre-Flight in 1945.

The 86 points were the second-most ever given up by the Tigers, who lost, 132-0, to Nevada Reno in 1919. “It was a complete physical mismatch,” Pacific Coach Walt Harris said.

Pawlawski and running backs Russell White and Greg Zomalt were lifted early in the third quarter. White gained 133 yards in 21 carries and scored one touchdown.

Cal had 634 yards in total offense, including 419 on the ground.

“We can’t blame Cal for rolling up the score,” said Pacific wide receiver Aaron Turner, who had eight receptions for 161 yards to become the Tigers’ all-time leader in reception yardage (1,847).

“We run our offense and they run their offense,” Turner said. “We pass a lot, and if we stop the clock, it’s not their fault. “
