HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Notre Dame Sweeps to Volleyball Victory

The volleyball season got off to a historic start for the Notre Dame High girls’ team Thursday night. The host Knights opened play with a sweep of Burroughs, 15-5, 15-11, 15-9, marking the school’s first three-game sweep of the Indians.

Ani Thorpe, a senior outside hitter, had 11 kills and Myra Flores added three stuff blocks to go with eight kills.

Setter Shannon Tuttle had 25 assists for Notre Dame.

In other volleyball matches:

Alemany d. Louisville, 15-8, 15-12, 17-15--Wendy Dreher had 13 kills and Kelly McKay added eight to lead visiting Alemany (1-0) in a nonleague match.

Canyon d. Hoover, 15-5, 15-7, 15-13--Gina Sanchez and Lisa Bussard each had 11 kills in the opener for both schools at Canyon.

Chaminade d. Oakridge (Tex.), 15-1, 15-9, 15-4--Sabrina Pozzi and Kristine Esters each had seven kills to lead host Chaminade (1-0) in a nonleague match.

L.A. Baptist d. Oak Park, 15-12, 15-9, 11-15, 15-5--Lucrieta Haynes had 14 kills and Sarah Rameson added eight for host L.A. Baptist in the opener for both schools.

Village Christian d. Holy Family, 15-4, 15-8, 15-9--Holly Esposito had 12 kills and Amy Crawford served four aces to lead host Village Christian (1-0) in a nonleague match.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Louisville d. Burbank, 16-2--Kerry Gallant and Kim Andre, Louisville’s top doubles team, did not lose a game in three sets and led Louisville (2-0) to a nonleague win at Burbank.

Westlake d. Hart, 17-1--Joanna Mazur lost just one game in winning three sets, leading host Westlake (1-0), the defending Southern Section 3-A Division champion, to a nonleague victory.

Thousand Oaks d. La Reina, 16-2--Michelle Palmisano, Ventura County’s basketball player of the year last spring, led the Lancers to an easy win.

Playing No. 1 singles, Palmisano won all three of her sets in the nonleague match.

Quartz Hill d. Barstow, 10-8--Quartz Hill’s Dhashini Mahadevan, a junior who plays No. 1 singles, won her three sets to lead visiting Quartz Hill (1-0) in a nonleague match.
