Irvine’s Passes Shoot Down University, 14-7

IRVINE — Senior Danny Kang caught two touchdown passes to lead Irvine High School’s football team to a 14-7 nonleague victory over University Friday night at Irvine Stadium.
It was the fourth consecutive victory by the Vaqueros over the Trojans and gives Irvine a 9--5 lead in the series.
Kang caught a 40-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jason Minici with 8 minutes 3 seconds left in the first quarter to give the Vaqueros a 7-0 lead, which they held at halftime.
Irvine then moved out to a 14-0 lead when Minici connected with Kang from seven yards out with 8:37 left in the third quarter.
University closed the gap to 14-7 when senior fullback Bao Nguyen scored from two yards out with 10:24 remaining in the game.
The Trojans got the ball back with three minutes left on their 24-yard line and moved the ball to the Vaquero 29.
But on a fourth-down play, Nguyen was stopped for a two-yard loss with 44 seconds left. Irvine then ran out the clock.
Minici completed six of 15 passes for 117 yards while University quarterback Chris Peake, in his first varsity start, completed nine of 21 passes for 122 yareds.
Irvine senior Scott Seal ran for 83 yards in 17 carries.
