La Quinta Can’t Stop Westminster

Westminster High School opened its season with a 27-7 nonleague victory over cross-town rival La Quinta Friday night in front of about 2,000 at Westminster.

Senior Christian Moore played offense and defense, leading the Lions with 180 yards in 14 carries and two touchdowns. His first came with 8 minutes 17 seconds left in the second quarter, after La Quinta’s David Matlock missed a 36-yard field-goal attempt.

After Westminster took over on the Aztec 19-yard line, Moore took the handoff and ran for a touchdown. The two-point conversion failed.

Moore scored with 7:55 left in the game, weaving up the left side for 26 yards. Quarterback Jared Wells, who took over for Johnny Mahurien in the fourth quarter, connected with Allan Marshall for the two-point conversion.

Lion running back Matt Bailey had 70 yards in 10 carries, and scored twice.

La Quinta scored at the end of the first quarter, when running back Billy Boulton slipped away from four defenders for a 27-yard run.
