Rancho Bernardo 37, Santa Margarita 23--Anton Villanueva gained 168 yards on six carries and scored two touchdowns, but the Eagles lost their season opener at Poway High School.
Villanueva opened the scoring with a 32-yard run to give Santa Margarita an early 7-0 lead. Villanueva later scored on a 75-yard touchdown run.
Josh Ireland scored Santa Margarita’s other touchdown on a 20-yard run in the third quarter. Ireland, who gained 178 yards on kickoff returns, also scored two two-point conversions.
Corona 28, Santa Ana Valley 0--Senior Dave Janoski ran for one touchdown and caught a pass for another on Corona’s first two possessions as the Panthers pummelled visiting Santa Ana Valley.
Janoski rushed for 90 yards, including a 45-yard touchdown run on the fourth play of the game. On the Panthers’ next possession, Janoski caught a five-yard pass from quarterback Steve Bernier in the right corner of the end zone.
Santa Ana Valley quarterback Armando Cueva had a dismal first half, completing only one of five passes, two of which were intercepted. Corona’s Ernest Dent returned one interception 50 yards for a touchdown.
Cueva finished five of 12 for 58 yards. Tight end Michael Murtaugh caught four passes.
Bernier completed nine of 19 passes for 117 yards, including the touchdown to Janoski and a 26-yard pass to wide receiver Greg Weston with 9:16 left in the second quarter. The play was set up by a Cueva fumble that was recovered by Mike Plinski.
