In the NCAA’s statistical printout of Cal Lutheran’s nonconference football game against host Cal State Hayward on Saturday, the Kingsmen led in just one category, and it was a dubious one at that.

Cal Lutheran outpunted Hayward, booting nine times for an average of 43.8 yards.

It was all downhill from there, as Hayward gained 397 yards en route to a 27-0 pasting of Cal Lutheran.

Hayward’s tandem of quarterback Brad Bretz and receiver Sam Bernstine did most of the damage, connecting on first-half scoring passes of 23, 33 and 61 yards to lead the rout.

“The three big TD plays were disastrous for us,” Cal Lutheran Coach Joe Harper said.

Cal Lutheran (0-2) trailed at halftime, 24-0. Lino Persi added field goals of 41 and 29 yards for Hayward.

Running back Cassidy O’Sullivan gained a team-high 25 yards in 18 carries for Cal Lutheran, which managed 139 yards.

Cal Lutheran quarterbacks Sheldon Ashkenazie and Adam Hacker completed a combined 18 of 38 passes for 140 yards and threw four interceptions.

“We played two inexperienced quarterbacks against a good defensive club today and were not consistent running or passing,” Harper said.

Bretz completed 15 of 24 passes for 253 yards and Bernstine caught five passes for 139 yards.

“Bernstine was a man among boys today,” Hayward Coach Tim Tierney said.

“He has great speed and I had him involved in almost every play of the playbook for the game.

“We wanted to isolate him as much as possible because we knew he could get open, and he sure did.”
