Baylor is making a habit of blocking field-goal attempts and recovering at the other end of the field to set up their own scores.

For the second time in two years, the Bears used another team’s scoring opportunity to their advantage by blocking a field-goal attempt and turning it into three points.

On Saturday, Santana Dotson blocked a 24-yard field-goal attempt by Colorado’s Jim Harper to set up teammate Jeff Ireland’s clinching field goal with 51 seconds left, giving No. 23 Baylor a 16-14 victory over No. 12 Colorado.

The loss ended Colorado’s winning streak, the nation’s longest, at 11 games.

Last season, Baylor (2-0) blocked a Texas Tech field-goal attempt and recovered at the Red Raiders’ one-yard line, setting up a touchdown that helped Baylor to a 21-15 victory.

On Saturday, the timing was even better. Colorado (1-1) had just recovered a Baylor fumble and appeared primed to add to its 14-13 lead with three minutes left.

“We were yelling ‘Texas Tech, Texas Tech’ on the sideline,” Baylor Coach Grant Teaff said. “Last year we had our backs to the wall and we blocked a field goal and it ended up (winning.)”

Dotson, a 6-foot-5, 264-pound senior defensive tackle, blocked Harper’s kick and the ball bounced across midfield, where Brian Hand picked it up and returned it 13 yards to the Colorado 30.

Tailback David Mims had a 13-yard run to help move the Bears in position for Ireland’s 35-yard game-winner.

Colorado had taken the lead at 14-13 on the first play of the fourth quarter.
