Unhealthful Air Predicted Today for Parts of O.C.

Health advisories were issued for parts of Orange County today because of air quality that will range from moderate to unhealthful, an AQMD spokeswoman said Monday.

Unhealthful air is predicted for Anaheim, where an AQMD Pollutant Standard Index rating of 138 is expected. Unhealthful air is also predicted for Fullerton and La Habra, where a rating of 175 is expected, said Claudia Keith, a spokeswoman for the South Coast Air Quality Management District in El Monte.

Keith said that a strong ridge with a high center over Northern California is creating an inversion layer that “acts like a lid squishing everything down.”

The result are trapped pollutants that could last through midweek, she said.

Health advisories are issued for the high desert, inland Orange County, Hemet-Elsinore and Riverside-San Bernardino areas; and the San Fernando-Santa Clarita and San Gabriel-Pomona valleys, she said.

The AQMD’s Pollutant Standard Index ratings are as follows: good air quality, 0-50; moderate, 51-100; unhealthful, 101-199; very unhealthful, 200-299; hazardous, 300 or more. (Air quality data appears on today’s weather page, B6.)
