ROUNDUP : Rinehart’s Return Sparks CLU to Soccer Victory, 3-2
- Share via
The Cal Lutheran men’s soccer team found the weak link in Cal State Dominguez Hills’ style of play Tuesday and the Kingsmen took advantage of it for their first victory of the season.
Dominguez Hills’ aggressive style kept the pressure on CLU, but it also left open spaces in the backfield. Cal Lutheran filled those spaces often enough to post a 3-2 victory in a nonconference match at Cal Lutheran.
The return of junior Dave Rinehart, sidelined in the preseason with a knee injury, gave the Kingsmen offense a boost. Rinehart, playing in his first match of the season, scored two goals, including the match winner with one minute to play. Rinehart first scored with 15 minutes left in the first half to tie the score, 1-1.
Willie Ruiz also scored for the Kingsmen (1-1-1) and John Sant had two assists.
Girardo Yepez scored two first-half goals for Dominguez Hills (2-1).
In another men’s soccer match:
Hancock 4, Mission 1--Tony Montalbano scored the lone goal for Mission (1-2) in a nonconference match at Hancock College in Santa Maria.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
CS Dominguez Hills 2, Cal Lutheran 1--CLU led, 1-0, in the second half of a nonconference match, but the host Regals failed to hold the lead
“They get ahead and do real well, but they just don’t have that let’s-put-’em-away attitude,” Cal Lutheran Coach George Kuntz said of his squad.
Cal Lutheran scored first, with 30 minutes to play, when Stephanie Roberts, one of six freshmen in CLU’s starting lineup, converted a penalty kick.
Dominguez Hills tied the score at the 70-minute mark on a goal by Christine Emch and took the lead on a goal by Amy Rubin three minutes later.
Cal Lutheran fell to 1-2. Dominguez Hills is 4-0.
